The 2006 FIFA World Cup was the 18th edition of the FIFA World Cup, the global championship tournament in men's association football, held across 12 cities in Germany from 9 June to 9 July 2006.

The defending champions were Brazil, who won the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea. The tournament was won by Italy, which beat France in the Olympiastadion, Berlin, on 9 July 2006.

In 2000, the Deutscher Fußball-Bund revealed their bid logo for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, moments before they were selected to host the tournament in July of that year.

The official emblem of the 2006 FIFA World Cup was unveiled on 19 November 2002 in Gelsenkirchen, a city in the North Rhine-Westphalia state of Germany, home to FC Schalke 04.

The official mascot was called Goleo VI and his sidekick was named Pille, and were unveiled on 13 November 2004 during an edition of the Wetten, daas..? program. Goleo VI was a lion wearing a white shirt with the letters 06 and Pillie was a anthromorphic football. The mascot costumes and puppets were manufactured at The Jim Henson Company.
