A&E Networks was founded as Hearst/ABC Video Services in 1981 by Hearst Corporation and ABC. The company also launched two television channels, the Alpha Repertory Television Service (ARTS) and Daytime (formerly BETA).

After merged ARTS and The Entertainment Channel, which are respectively owned by Hearst/ABC and NBC/Rockefeller Group. The name was renamed to A&E Television Networks, while they kept the ownership from its channels.

In 2012, NBCUniversal sold its stake in A+E Networks to Disney and Hearst, making them a 50-50 joint venture.
