ABC TV started on May 25, 1955, when New Japan Broadcasting System (NJB) and the Asahi Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) founded Osaka Television Co., Ltd. (OTV), before commencing its broadcasts on December 1st of the following year under the callsign JOBX-TV which its call letters are currently in use at Oita Asahi Broadcasting, an ANN station in Kyūshū. At that time, OTV was affiliated with Radio Tokyo TV (now known as TBS Television) and NTV for its first two years.

After its affiliation with NTV was lost due to the creation of Yomiuri TV in 1958, ABC purchased OTV and rebranded itself to ABC-OTV in the time of transition during March of the following year. In June of that year, the station rebranded to ABC Television with the callsign JONR-TV, an analog signal which lasted until 2011. Despite the logo being retired in 1970 in favor of the then-new ABC logo from that period being introduced, the logo continued to be used on the sign-on ident until 1989.
