American Bell was formed on November 1, 1982 to take over computer technology and telephone equipment leasing operations from the Bell System upon its breakup on January 1, 1983. Twelve- and eight-bar versions of this logo existed for small print and signage purposes[1][2], the former becoming the face of parent company AT&T after its restructuring in 1984.

American Bell was renamed to AT&T Information Systems upon AT&T’s restructuring in 1984. It was fully absorbed back into AT&T in 1989.
