In 1988 during the closing ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games Calgary 1988. The emblem logo was introduced. It was a redesign of the bidding logo that was introduced during the mid-80s when it was in the application and bidding process.

In 1989, the mascot was introduced. He was named Magique, a little imp in the shape of a star and a cube. His colors come from the French flag. The mascot was designed by Philippe Mairesse. Originally, the mascot was going to be a charmois named Hola who was introduced at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games Calgary 1988 and was designed by Michael Pirus.

The official mascot was Alpy, designed by Vincent Thiebaut, represented the summit of the Grande Motte mountain in Tignes. Alpy was shown on a mono-ski to demonstrate its athleticism and the colours of white, green and blue were used to represent purity/snow, hope/nature and discipline/the lake. The bird logo was designed by Jean-Michel Folon.
