Artisan Entertainment was founded as U.S.A. Home Video. It was a label of Family Home Entertainment that distributed non-kids or family-related material. This division was renamed as International Video Entertainment in 1984 when FHE became an imprint. The last tapes with this logo would have it at the beginning of tapes, with IVE's logo at the end.

International Video Entertainment, Inc. was the name U.S.A. Home Video took in 1984. By 1987, Carolco Pictures acquired both IVE and Family Home Entertainment. In 1988, International Video Entertainment and Family Home Entertainment were consolidated into LIVE Entertainment and the IVE brand remained until 1990, when it was renamed as LIVE Home Video.

In 1997, LIVE was acquired by Bain Capital and was taken private. As part of a restructuring process, in April 1998, the company became Artisan Entertainment.
On December 15, 2003, Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation acquired Artisan for $220 million and video and DVD releases through Artisan have now been re-released under Lionsgate Home Entertainment. After the sale, Artisan Entertainment, Inc. was renamed to Lions Gate Entertainment, Inc.
