Pão de Açúcar in Portugal was founded in 1969 as a joint-venture between Companhia Brasileira de Distribuição (coincidentally founded by Portuguese immigrants) and Grupo CUF through Companhia Portuguesa de Supermercados (SUPA), being the first major supermarket chain in the country. Its first store opened the following year in Av. dos Estados Unidos da América in Lisbon (now a Pingo Doce store).
1992–2008[]
By the early 1990s, Grupo Pão de Açúcar started deemphasizing the connection between their native Brazilian and Portuguese units by creating its own branding for the retailer in Portugal. This logo was kept after French retailer Auchan acquired GPA's assets in Spain and Portugal in 1996.
