Ayds were discontinued in 1988 after its sales had dropped by over 50% due to the rise in public awareness of the AIDS disease in the early 1980s. The brand gained notoriety due to it having the same pronunciation as the disease, as well as the fact that AIDS caused immense weight loss in patients and the Ayds candy was a weight loss candy. The downfall of Ayds is seen as one of the worst marketing disasters of all time.
