www.bbc.co.uk was introduced in April of 1994 with some regional information and Open University Production Centre (OUPC) content. Later that year the "BBC Networking Club" was launched. The official BBC Online website would launch on the 28 April 1997.

In 2001 BBC Online was re-branded as BBCi and the new website launched on 7 November 2001.

Following the re-brand of the BBCi television service in May 2004, the website was renamed as 'bbc.co.uk'.

On 14 December 2007 a beta version of the bbc.co.uk homepage was launched, before becoming the new website on 27 February 2008.
