Bank Austria was formed in 1991 by the merger of the Länderbank and Zentralsparkasse banks.
In 2000, HVB Bank bought Bank Austria, with the latter being delisted from the Vienna Stock Exchange.

In 2002, Bank Austria merged with Creditanstalt to form Bank Austria Creditanstalt.
