On June 13, 2013, Gannett Company announced a deal to buy Belo for $1.5 billion. On December 23, the sale was completed.

In 2015, Gannett split into two companies, one specializing in print media, which kept the Gannett name, and one specializing in broadcast and digital media, which is called TEGNA. TEGNA is the previous Gannett with a new name and Belo's successor-in-interest.
