Betamax was an early video format, but it lost a format war in 1988, but surprisingly were still being distributed, but production was then only made available in Japan. On August 29, 2002, Sony pronounced the discontinuation of the production of all remaining Betamax models. Sony then continued to sell Betamax cassettes until Betamax's total discontinuation in March 2016.
