The first Big W opened in 1964 in Jesmond, New South Wales. The chain grew out of Woolworths Limited's original Variety Stores. In 1970, the name Big W ceased to be used and the stores were converted into Woolworths Family Centers.

In 1976 Big W was resurrected with their first department store in Tamworth, New South Wales.

By 1989, the separation of Big W and Woolworths Supermarkets was largely completed, although a few Woolworths Variety Stores continued to operate into the nineties. Some stores like Nambour in Queensland and Whitford in Western Australia still use this logo as store signage.
