The Birmingham bid largely revolved around the National Exhibition Centre. The shooting would have been hosted at the Aldersley Stadium, Wolverhampton, where an £8 million complex was to have been built under the bid proposal.[1] Weymouth in Dorset, meanwhile, would have hosted the sailing events.[2]

At the 91st IOC Session in Lausanne, Switzerland on 17 October 1986, the Birmingham bid was eliminated in the second round of voting; Barcelona's bid would be successful.[3]
