In 2016, BlackBerry Limited outsourced its smartphone production to TCL, with the release of BlackBerry DTEK50, until its partnership with TCL ended in 2020. However, BlackBerry started to license its brand to OnwardMobility to release its first 5G smartphone but it was never released. OnwardMobility would then cease operations in 2022.
On January 4, 2022, BlackBerry Limited's support for BlackBerry OS, PlayBook OS and BlackBerry 10 platforms reached its end of life status except for its Android-based phones.
