The specification was released to the public under the name Wibree in 2006. At the time, it was being developed by Nokia.
Bluetooth Smart[]
2011–2016[]
In 2011, Bluetooth Special Interest Group rebranded Wibree as Bluetooth Smart so as to clarify compatibility between the new low energy devices and other Bluetooth devices.
Bluetooth Low Energy[]
2016–present[]
In 2016, Bluetooth Special Interest Group began phasing out the Bluetooth Smart branding. They renamed the technology as Bluetooth Low Energy and began using the regular Bluetooth logo.
