The red stripe beneath the wordmark was borrowed from parent company Borders Group, who adopted it two years prior. Borders Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2011, and all US Borders and Waldenbooks locations would be liquidated by September 2011. In December 2013, a Borders-branded branch of Popular bookstores opened in the Westgate Mall in Jurong East, Singapore, but was rebranded back to the Popular name five months later. Locations in Oman and the United Arab Emirates still operate under license, though a sister branch in Malaysia closed in August 2023.
