1915-1956[]
During this period, football in Morocco was played under French and Spanish colonial control. Local and regional competitions were held, but there was no unified national league.

1956-1996[]
Following Morocco’s independence, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) established an official national league in 1956. The league became the top tier of Moroccan football and grew steadily in popularity.

1996-2009[]

The league was officially known as GNF 1 (Groupement National de Football 1). It was managed by the FRMF and included a promotion/relegation system. Moroccan clubs began participating more in continental competitions during this time.
2009-2015[]

This was a transition era as the league started preparing for full professionalization. Efforts were made to modernize club structures and improve league standards. The league began being referred to as Botola.
2015-2019[]

The league became fully professional and adopted the name Botola Pro, with Maroc Telecom as the main sponsor. It was the beginning of a modern era, with broadcasting rights and better infrastructure.
2020-present[]
The league entered a new chapter with Inwi as the official sponsor. It continues to grow in visibility, with improved TV deals, digital presence, and growing fan engagement across Morocco.
