Initially, the 'b' monogram was composed of 13 dots. This design however drew criticism from passengers, fearing that the use of a logo with 13 segments would act as a bad omen[1] (the number 13 being widely regarded in western society as an unlucky number).

The airline chose to remedy the design by adding or subtracting a dot on the stem of the 'b'. The airline decided against reducing the number of dots to 12, as they wanted to avoid the number's religious connotations (of the 12 apostles). As such, they decided on a design with 14 dots.
