On January 1, 2006, Viacom was split into two companies, one focused on cable networks and one focused on broadcasting. This split was done in this matter: the original Viacom spun off its cable networks and Paramount Pictures into a new company, which carried the Viacom name. The original Viacom subsequently changed its name to CBS Corporation, resurrecting the name.

A second merger between CBS Corporation and Viacom, creating the combined company ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global), was announced on August 13, 2019; the merger was completed on December 4, 2019.
