1997–2000

In 1997, the Westinghouse Electric Company renamed itself into a new company called CBS Corporation (spinning off the industrial assets to other companies, while retaining the brand rights) as it refocused itself on broadcasting and media. Westinghouse had acquired CBS in 1995 and merged it into the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company (Group W). In 1999, Viacom purchased the company.

2005–2019

On December 31, 2005, Viacom was split into two companies, one focused on cable networks and one focused on broadcasting. This split was done in this matter: the original Viacom spun off its cable networks and Paramount Pictures into a new company, which carried the Viacom name. The original Viacom subsequently changed its name to CBS Corporation, resurrecting the name.

A second merger between CBS Corporation and Viacom, creating the combined company ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global), was announced on August 13, 2019; the merger was completed on December 4, 2019.
