2005–2019
In 1997 the Westinghouse Electric Company renamed itself as CBS Corporation as it refocused itself on broadcasting and media. Westinghouse had acquired CBS in 1995 and merged it into the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company (Group W). In 1999, Viacom purchased the company.
On December 31, 2005, Viacom was split into two companies, one focused on cable networks and one focused on broadcasting. This split was done in this matter: the original Viacom spun off its cable networks and Paramount Pictures into a new company, which carried the name Viacom. The original Viacom subsequently changed its name to CBS Corporation, resurrecting the name.
A second merger between CBS Corporation and Viacom, creating the combined company ViacomCBS, was announced on August 13, 2019; the merger was completed on December 4, 2019.
