CNBC went on the air on April 17, 1989, as the Consumer News and Business Channel. Two years later, in 1991, the network acquired its main competitor, the Financial News Network, with the merger being consummated on May 21; for a time after the acquisition, the channel identified itself as CNBC/FNN.

On May 12, 1996, CNBC introduced a new logo that incorporated the NBC peacock in order to better identify it as an NBC-affiliated channel. This logo is still used if you haven't whitelisted CNBC's website on an adblocker.

On December 10, 2023, CNBC updated its logo for the first time after 27 years, adopting the redesigned peacock and corporate typeface introduced by parent NBC in November 2022 and rolled out across the network's properties, including sister network MSNBC, throughout 2023. In addition, the color of the "CNBC" text changed from black to dark blue.
