The first CVS Pharmacy outlets were opened by Massachusetts-based retailer Consumer Value Stores in 1973. Its logo uses the same basic wordmark first established by the original CVS four years prior.

CVS' non-pharmacy operations were converted, sold, or closed by 1996. This logo still appears at various stores, as they are gradually being updated to the current one.

In 2016, the heart symbol of parent CVS Health was added to the logo, and the slash was dropped.
