Canal Digital was created by a joint venture between Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor and French TV network Canal+ in 1997 to compete against Viasat. Canal Digital AS also had rights to use Canal+ branding in the Nordics/Scandinavia.
In 2003, Canal+ left the venture and Telenor became the sole owner of the company. In the same year, Canal Digital was merged with its sibling Telenor Avidi, resulting in two companies, named:
- Canal Digital (Nordics)
- Canal Digital Kabel TV (Norway)
Canal Digital primarily used an orange logo while Canal Digital Kabel TV primarily used a blue logo until 2012.
