Capsule was formed in 1997 by vocalist Toshiko Koshijima and producer Yasutaka Nakata, they signed with Yamaha Music Communications in 2001 (and soon in 2003, releasing under Nakata's label Contemode).

In 2013, the band left Yamaha (as well as Contemode, who went defunct in 2013) and signed with Warner Music Japan and Asobi System.
Since 2013, the name started to be stylized with all uppercase letters.
