Cash Money Records was originally founded as an underground record label, before (along with ex-Time Warner label Interscope Records) being acquired by the then-newly-founded Universal Records, which at the time (like its movie counterpart) was under ownership of MCA in the spring of 1996. Since then, the MCA trademark name was revamped to the then-recently reincorporated Universal Music Group, buying out 50% of Cash Money, making it a subsidiary of UMG through Republic Records.
