The bank was founded on September 26, 1837.
In December 1991, the bank's ownership was transferred to Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna. Casse Emiliano Romagnole became a sub-holding of the bank. That same year, they also acquired Banca dell'Emilia-Romagna per i Finanziamenti a Medio e Lungo Termine (which was later absorbed into the latter in 1994).
Because of Casse Emiliano Romagnole becoming Cardine Banca, the company became the new sub-holding of Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna.
