Chessie System was a holding company for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, and the Western Maryland Railway, that all operated in a convoluted fashion, as C&O had controlling interest of B&O and both B&O and C&O had controlling interest in WM since the 1960s. The Chessie System got its name and logo from the C&O mascot, Chessie, a kitten that had been a popular advertising campaign for the company.

Chessie System merged with Seaboard Coast Line Industries in 1980 to form the early iterations of CSX. Through the former Seaboard railroads merging to create the Seaboard System in 1982, that renamed itself CSX in 1986 and a consolidation of B&O into the C&O in 1987, as well as a merger of the C&O into CSX, the Chessie System name was retired.
