The Citizens & Southern National Bank (C&S) was founded in 1906 as Citizens and Southern Bank of Georgia. It was the result of a merger between the Citizens Bank of Savannah and its competitor, the Southern Bank of Georgia. In 1927, the bank was chartered to do business in South Carolina.
After regulations were loosened, the Citizens and Southern Georgia Corporation acquired the previously-divested South Carolina bank in 1986. To avoid a hostile takeover from NCNB, C&S’ parent company acquired Sovran Bank in 1990, becoming C&S/Sovran. This company would inevitably be purchased by NCNB in 1991, forming NationsBank.
