Indians

On January 29, 2018, the MLB announced that the "Chief Wahoo" logo (which the team had used since 1949) would be removed from the Cleveland Indians' branding starting with the 2019 season, as the league stated that it was no longer appropriate for on-field use due to its racist connotations (although the team still had no plans to change its name). In its place, the 2008 alternate logo (based on the 1904 Cleveland Blues logo) was instated as the primary logo.

On July 23, 2021, the team announced that it would change its name to the Cleveland Guardians for the 2022 season, marking an end to the Cleveland Indians name that had been used since 1915. This was due to protest by Native American groups and others, who argue that the "Indians" were considered racist. The new name refers to the Guardians of Traffic, a series of eight large Art Deco statues on the Hope Memorial Bridge, near the team's stadium Progressive Field.
