In September 2001, the band began performing under the name Coheed and Cambria, also the title of their last EP as Shabutie. The name derives from Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon, characters created by frontman Claudio Sanchez and the protagonists of his "Amory Wars" saga, an overarching story told through the band's music (and later comics). Their first studio album, Second Stage Turbine Blade, was released in February 2002.

This symbol, known as the "Keywork", symbolizes the flow of energy between the planets in the Amory Wars universe. It first appeared on material for their second album In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 in October 2003.
