Coke, more commonly known as New Coke from its original packaging, was introduced by The Coca-Cola Company on April 23, 1985 as a reformulation of the company's flagship soft drink. Having been met with massive consumer backlash during its inception, the company eventually re-released the original formulation 79 days after the debut of the new formula, which was rebranded as "Coca-Cola Classic" to distinguish itself from New Coke. The "NEW!" banner would be removed in 1986.
On May 21, 2019, The Coca-Cola Company announced that New Coke would be relaunched for a limited time, as part of a partnership deal with Netflix to promote the third season of Stranger Things. And as such, Coca-Cola's online shop and social media profiles were eventually redesigned for a brief time to promote this limited re-release.

On March 6, 1990, The Coca-Cola Company announced the potential rebranding of "New" Coke to Coke II, to be test marketed in one American city for an undisclosed period. Ten days later, it was reported that Spokane, Washington had been chosen as their test site. Coke II hit the shelves there on April 4, 1990, and the brand would remain exclusive to Spokane for the next two years. In April 1992, Coca-Cola gave the green light to a larger roll-out, and distribution began in Chicago, Illinois and Fort Wayne, Indiana that month. By the end of May, the amount of markets in which the drink was sold had tripled. It was introduced to Alberta, Canada in September 1992, but discontinued there by the end of 1994.
Distribution of the drink was only contained to markets otherwise dominated by Pepsi, as "New" Coke disappeared from store shelves elsewhere. Coke II would be formally discontinued on July 10, 2002.
