Coles began operation on 9 April 1914 in Smith Street, Collingwood as Coles Variety Store. Its first supermarket opened in 1960 in Balwyn North, Melbourne and traded under the Dickins name.
Coles New World
1962–1973
In 1962, its supermarkets were branded Coles New World with accompanying Space Age rocket imagery. This coincided with the opening of the first New World supermarket in Frankston, Victoria.

In April 1991, Coles New World was rebanded Coles Supermarkets. The red and orange orb remained as a reminder of their "New World" days.
