Coles began operation on 9 April 1914 in Smith Street, Collingwood as Coles Variety Store. Its first supermarket opened in 1960 in Balwyn North, Melbourne and traded under the Dickins name.

In 1962, its supermarkets were branded Coles New World with accompanying Space Age rocket imagery. This coincided with the opening of the first New World supermarket in Frankston, Victoria. Following this success, the company ventured into discount stores and in 1968 opened Colmart in Whyalla, South Australia.
