Conrail was formed in 1976 by the US Government by merging the Penn Central, Erie-Lackawanna, and many smaller eastern United States railroads. The logo was used from that merger in 1976 until Conrail was divided between the Norfolk Southern and CSX in 1999. Remnants of Conrail are still in service as switching operations in Detroit and New Jersey.
