In the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks in March 2019, the Crusaders entered talks to rename themselves. The current name has been criticized for being offensive to the Muslim community. In November 2019 however, it was decided the name will remain as is, albeit with a new accompanying logo and wordmark.

On the 16th October 2019, the logo was changed to remove the knight icon in advance of upcoming Super Rugby season.
