On November 16, 2021, it was announced that Crypto.com had secured the new naming rights for the next 20 years (which was worth $700 million), making it the first name change in the venue's history. It has been criticized by many for deviating from the "landmark" status that the former name has evoked.[1]
On December 6, 2021, the outer Staples Center signage was taken down, effectively marking the beginning of the transition.[2] Later on December 20, the new Crypto.com Arena banner was put up outside, in addition to updating the inside branding, as well as the standalone pylon sign outside.[3][4] The last event as Staples Center was an NBA game of the Los Angeles Lakers against the San Antonio Spurs on December 23.[5]
The new name officially took effect with that year's NBA Christmas game (Lakers vs. the Brooklyn Nets) on December 25. Phase 1 of the venue's ongoing renovation process was completed during the summer of 2022, when new, proper outer signage was put up.[6][7][8]
