Windows DVD Player was discontinued in Windows XP in favor of a built-in DVD playback functionality on Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center. However, there is a stub with the same icon present in XP and Windows' future releases which launches Windows Media Player.
2015–present[]
After Microsoft dropped Windows Media Center on Windows 10, which was the only option to play DVD movies after Microsoft dropped the built-in DVD playback functionality on Windows Media Player in Windows 8, Microsoft relaunched the DVD Player app as a paid UWP-based app, which can be purchased via the Microsoft Store.
