The Dayton Dutch Lions were created in 2009 to join the USL Premier Development League for the 2010 season. In 2010 they announced that they would move to the USL Second Division for the 2011 season. By then it had become USL Pro, making the Dutch Lions founder members. There are two other clubs with the Dutch Lions name: Cincinnati Dutch Lions and Houston Dutch Lions.

On December 11, 2014, Dayton Dutch Lions signalled their intention to return to the PDL.[1]
