Der Spiegel is a news magazine from Germany, it's published weekly on Saturday and was first published on 4 January 1947. It was first published in Hannover. Today, the main offices of the magazine are situated in the German city-state of Hamburg.

Diese Woche[]

The predecessor to "Der Spiegel" was a publication called "Diese Woche". It was first published on 16 November 1946 and was founded by the British.

This logo was used for the earliest test printing of the magazine, it's heavily inspired by the British "News Review".

The second logo of "Diese Woche", which was used for two test printings in the weeks running up to the first edition, as well as all editions published in 1946.

The British Foreign Office ordered the complete stop of the publication of the "Diese Woche" magazine by the end of 1946, due to the critique that was levied against the Allies in the magazine.

Der Spiegel[]

One of the founders, John Seymour Chaloner, was allowed to hand over the magazine to German owners, one of them being future publisher Rudolf Augstein. With that handover, the magazine was renamed to "Der Spiegel" and the first edition was published on 4 January 1947[1].

This logo was based on the earlier design of "Diese Woche", over the course of the next few years, it would be shrunk down and moved into the background to put more focus on the people that are depicted on the cover.
