Deskstar was a brand of hard disk drives (HDDs) originally created by IBM and introduced in October 1994. In early 2003, IBM's storage division was spun off to Hitachi, who then promptly relaunched it as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST), in turn becoming a Hitachi brand. In early 2012, HGST was bought by Western Digital, which would retain the HGST name and its associated brands. HGST was finally deactivated by Western Digital in 2018, effectively taking with it its now-former brands, including Deskstar and many other Star family HDD products with the exception of Ultrastar, which it is now being made under the Western Digital brand since 2018.
