Detroit Grand Prix started in 1989 with CART as a replacement for the Formula 1 Detroit Grand Prix.
Detroit Grand Prix at Belle Isle[]
1992-2001[]

In 1992 they moved from downtown Detroit to Belle Isle. In 2001 Cart removed the Belle Isle Grand Prix due to poor upkeep and complaints from drivers.
2007-2008[]

In 2007, IndyCar brought back the race briefly until it was cancelled again due to the economic recession of 2008.
2012-2017[]

IndyCar revied the race again in 2012.
2017-2022[]

Detroit Grand Prix (second era)[]
2022-present[]

After the 2022 race, IndyCar announced their plan to move the race from Belle Isle to downtown Detroit in front of the Renaissance Center starting in the 2023 season.
