This article is about the national railway of Germany between the two world wars. For the state railway of the post-war East Germany, see Deutsche Reichsbahn (East Germany).
1920–1949[]
The Deutsche Reichsbahn was founded on April 1, 1920 in the Weimar Republic (German Reich), shortly after the end of the first world war.
In 1949, Germany formally split into two independent nations, commonly referred to as West Germany and East Germany. When this split took place, East Germany took control over the DR on its territory, continuing to use the traditional Deutsche Reichsbahn name, while the railway in West Germany became the Deutsche Bundesbahn.
