The Indian version of Disney Channel launched on 17 December 2004.^[1] Initially it showed live-action productions in addition to animated shows, but since 2016 it has focused solely on animated cartoons, especially from India and Japan. Therefore it is one of the only Disney Channels globally not to show the American Disney Channel’s live-action shows, but this role is performed by Disney International HD.

On 16 December 2004, Disney Channel India and its sister channel Toon Disney launched in India.

2014-2018[]

The channel rebranded on 17 December 2014 with the new logo used internationally, with the exception of the logo colour being purple instead of blue.

2018-present[]

On 1 May 2018, the channel's logo color was changed to blue, as used internationally.

An HD feed was scheduled to be launched on 1 December 2021, along with an HD feed of Hungama, and Marvel HQ being renamed to Super Hungama, while BabyTV HD was to be withdrawn from India.^[2] However, on 26 November 2021, these launches were indefinitely postponed, due to a delay in the TRAI’s new tariff rules.^[3] The HD feed was properly launched on 15 March 2023 and has a different schedule than the SD feed.

As a result of the station's move to Detroit, WFRO in the Toledo market as well as another station in Northern Michigan (also on 900) were taken off the air to allow WFDF to increase its broadcast power.
