1988 (prototypes)[]

These sketches of the logo were drawn by the late Akira Toriyama himself when Toei was working on a sequel to Dragon Ball, which adapted the remaining 325 chapters of the original manga.
1989–1996 (original anime version)[]
Dragon Ball Z (ドラゴンボール, Doragon Bōru Zetto, commonly abbreviated as DBZ) is the long-running sequel to the anime Dragon Ball. The series is a close adaptation of the second (and far longer) portion of the Dragon Ball manga written and drawn by Akira Toriyama. In the United States, the manga's second portion is also titled Dragon Ball Z to prevent confusion for younger readers.
1989–present[]
1996–2003 (Funimation version); 1989–present (franchise)[]
In Japan, this logo (with Katakana underneath) was originally only used on some merchandise, such as CDs and video games. In the USA, this logo would be used for all English DBZ-related material in the franchise. The dub initially aired in first-run syndication from September 13, 1996 to May 23, 1998, and then aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami block from August 31, 1998 to April 7, 2003 with reruns until March 15, 2008, though not always with the same continuity of dubbing (for details on the dubbing problems, see Ocean Group dubs and Funimation dub).
