ESPN8 The Ocho was created as a network-within-a-movie for the 2004 sports comedy film, DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story, which broadcast an annual dodgeball tournament held by the fictitious American Dodgeball Association of America (ADAA).

In December 2023, The Ocho was launched by ESPN as its first FAST channel, using the same logo and branding from DodgeBall. The channel includes "seldom seen sports", including foosball, wiffleball, table tennis, axe throwing, and even pillow fighting (to name a few), and is available through streaming on The Roku Channel and DirecTV Stream. It also made an appearance on the Paramount+ miniseries, Knuckles, broadcasting a bowling tournament.

As a result of the station's move to Detroit, WFRO in the Toledo market as well as another station in Northern Michigan (also on 900) were taken off the air to allow WFDF to increase its broadcast power.
