In 1947, A.W. Allbright approached the City Commissioners about updating the City Crest. The Commissioners agreed and in 1948 an invitation was sent to the public to submit designs, with prizes of $10, $5, and $3. The City only received a few submissions so they raised the prize to $150. The City Crest Committee adjudicated the design submissions and agreed on symbols that would appear on the new crest. In September 1949 the motto " Industry, Integrity, Progress" was adopted and the final crest was adopted by Council on October 11, 1949. This image is of the original City Crest designed by R.B. Mackenzie, which was adopted by Council in 1949.
