On July 21, 2020, the team retired the "Eskimos" name due to a growing criticism of using indigenous names in sports teams. The term "Eskimo" was considered offensive to Inuit people. While the searched for a new name, they were temporarily using the "Edmonton Football Team" and "EE Football Team' names. While the logo was kept for the season, the team did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team annouced its new name, the Elks on June 1, 2021. The hunter green/athletic gold colours were kept, but the elk took the place of the EE monogram on the helmets.
