Starting in mid-to-late June 2020, many brands with mixed-race characters incorporated into their branding (including Uncle Ben's, Aunt Jemima, Cream of Wheat, Mrs. Butterworth's, and namely, Eskimo Pie) said they would make changes to their logos, packaging, and even names following protests over systematic racism against them.
On June 19, 2020, Eskimo Pie's owner, Dreyer's (subsidiary of Froneri, a Nestlé company), announced that it would change the Eskimo Pie brand name and marketing, saying the term is "derogatory".
On October 7, 2020, Dreyer's announced the new name: Edy's Pie. Dreyer's said they had paused production of the product until the new branding rolls out, which will begin in early 2021.
