Ekono was first known as Ekonomic, opening its first store in 30 August 1984.

The Ekono brand was dropped in 2003. All locations were transferred to the Express de Líder brand.
2007–2018[]
Ekono was relaunched in 2007 as a discount supermarket. In October 2017 it was confirmed that Ekono brand would be discontinued again, in favour to the Express de Líder brand. The Ekono's locations were reconverted during 2018 and some stores were closed permanently.
